Here's what we were working with - a sloped landscape bed that had seen better days. Old mulch that had broken down, weeds pushing through, and beds that just looked tired. It's one of the most common things we see this time of year.

We pulled out the old mulch first. That part matters more than most people realize. Laying fresh material on top of a degraded base is a shortcut that creates more problems down the road. Starting clean is always worth it.

Once the bed was cleared, we laid down fresh weed fabric before putting down the new mulch. The fabric acts as a barrier - it slows weed growth without suffocating the soil entirely. Paired with a good layer of fresh mulch on top, the beds are set up to stay cleaner and easier to maintain going forward.

The natural boulder edging running along the bed perimeter ties everything together. It creates a clear separation between the lawn and the mulched area, which keeps the whole yard looking organized and intentional. Small details like that make a big difference in the overall appearance.

A mulch refresh is one of those updates that looks simple but has real practical value. It helps retain moisture around your plants, regulates soil temperature, and cuts down on the time you spend pulling weeds. The beds look sharp now, and they'll be easier to manage all season.
